Tucked into the hills above La Cala de Mijas, La Cala Golf Resort is one of those places that makes people rethink what they want from life on the Costa del Sol. Green fairways roll out in every direction, the Mediterranean glints on the horizon, and yet the beach and the village are only a short drive away.
Our office sits just down the road in La Cala Hills, so this is an area we know well and love showing to buyers. Over the coming weeks, we're running a villa series on social media, featuring five villas we currently have for sale on and around the resort. This guide is the backstory: what the resort offers, how life there actually works, and what the property market looks like right now.
Where it is, and how close the coast really is
La Cala Golf Resort sits in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas, inland from La Cala de Mijas and roughly halfway between Marbella and Málaga. The resort itself spreads across around 400 hectares of countryside, so it feels properly rural, even though the coast is close by.
The beach is about 10 minutes away by car, and La Cala de Mijas village is around 5 km down the hill. That's where you'll find the seafront boardwalk, the beach bars and restaurants, and the busy Wednesday and Saturday markets. Head along the coast and Cabopino, the Artola dunes, Calahonda and Elviria are all within easy reach.
For day-to-day life and travel, the practical distances are what matter most:
- Málaga Airport: around 35 minutes by car
- Marbella: around 20 minutes
- Fuengirola: a short drive along the coast, with its shopping centres, El Corte Inglés and Tuesday market
- Supermarkets and services: Mercadona, Carrefour and ALDI nearby, plus pharmacies, medical centres and international schools in the surrounding area
A car makes life much easier here. It isn't essential for a golf holiday, but if you're living at La Cala full or part time, you'll want one.
The golf: 54 holes on your doorstep
La Cala is recognised by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation as the largest golf complex in Spain, and one of very few 54-hole resorts in continental Europe. All three 18-hole championship courses were designed by Cabell Robinson, and each has its own personality.
- Campo Asia opened first, in 1989. It's the hilliest and most technical of the three, with tight fairways, and many low handicappers rate it the toughest test on the resort.
- Campo America followed in 1991 and is often called La Cala's premier course. It's known for its standout par 3s and par 5s and the most open, panoramic views down to the sea.
- Campo Europa arrived in 2005. Wider fairways, flatter terrain and slightly larger greens make it the most forgiving of the three, though a river comes into play on several holes and keeps things interesting.
Alongside the big courses there's a Par 3 short course, which is ideal for a quick evening round or for getting children and beginners started. The Golf Hub brings together the academy, golf simulators, swing analysis, group clinics and a Junior Golf School, with a terrace for a drink afterwards.
For buyers, the practical point is simple. You can play three different championship courses without ever getting in the car, and green fees, buggies and club hire are all available on site.
More than golf: the resort facilities
One of the things buyers appreciate most is that the facilities aren't just for hotel guests. The golf, spa and restaurants are open to residents and outside visitors too, and the resort runs all year round.
- The hotel: a 107-room boutique hotel built in traditional Andalusian style, named Spain's Best Golf Hotel at the 2025 World Golf Awards. Handy when friends and family come to stay and your guest room is already full.
- The spa: a hydrotherapy circuit with thermal baths, steam rooms and heated pools, an outdoor jacuzzi, Balinese beds, and a full menu of massages and treatments, including recovery treatments aimed at golfers.
- Restaurants and bars: The Steakhouse, La Terraza for Mediterranean dishes, the Clubhouse for breakfast and lunch with course views, seasonal outdoor dining at El Patio, plus the Panoramic Bar and Pool Bar.
- Sport and fitness: a fully equipped gym and fitness classes, three padel courts, a floodlit tennis court, a squash court and football facilities.
- Events: themed evenings, golf competitions, live entertainment and festive celebrations through the year, which make it easy to meet people and settle in.

What everyday life looks like
Living at La Cala is a little different from living on the coast. Mornings are quiet, the air is fresher, and the views stretch across fairways and pine-covered hills to the sea. Then, 10 minutes later, you can be having lunch on the beach in La Cala de Mijas.
The Sierra de Mijas is right behind the resort, with walking and cycling routes, and horse is riding nearby. Mijas Pueblo, Marbella Old Town, Puerto Banús and the museums of Málaga all make easy days out, and the Caminito del Rey is within reach for a bigger adventure.
It works as a holiday home and as a full-time base. Families have the Junior Golf School, the pools and international schools in the area, while retirees and remote workers tend to value the calm, the sport and the sense of community that grows up around the clubhouse and the courses.
The La Cala property market
La Cala Golf Resort offers a real mix of homes: apartments and penthouses, townhouses in gated communities, detached villas, and even building plots for anyone who'd like to design their own. There's a steady pipeline of new builds too, alongside established resale homes with mature gardens.
As a rough guide to asking prices in autumn 2026:
Property type | Typical asking prices |
|---|---|
Apartments and penthouses | From around €400,000, with larger penthouses at €600,000+ |
Townhouses and semi-detached villas | Around €400,000 to €700,000 |
Detached villas | Roughly €1 million to over €3.5 million |
Building plots | From around €200,000 |
What moves a villa up that scale? Frontline golf position, open sea views, plot size and privacy, and how recently the home was built or renovated. A contemporary new-build on a large frontline plot sits at the top, while an older villa with renovation potential can offer excellent value.
Demand comes largely from international buyers looking for a lifestyle home, a holiday base or a future retirement home. Owners who aren't living here full time can also look at holiday rental, subject to the correct tourist licence.
Our La Cala villa series
Over the next few weeks, we're showcasing five villas from our portfolio, one at a time, across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. Each one has its own character, and together they show just how varied villa life at La Cala can be.
As you follow the series, here are a few things worth looking out for in each home:
- Position: frontline golf, sea views, or a quieter spot tucked away from the fairways
- Outdoor living: terraces, pool, garden and how the home uses the afternoon sun
- Layout: guest space for visiting family, home office potential, and whether it suits year-round living
- Condition: ready to move into, or a chance to put your own stamp on it
Follow us on social media so you don't miss the next one, and look out for #AlisonNortonProperties.
